Returning from Medjugorje, a number of pilgrims decided to meet regularly to pray and discuss how they could spread the message of Medjugorje locally. Fr. Tom Cass (R.I.P.) gave his support and provided a meeting place at the Sacred Heart, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. The inaugural meeting of the group in May 1989 adopted the name, Medjugorje Promoters’ Group ( North East ).
In 1990, Fr Brendan Hodgson O.P.(R.I.P.) was invited to be Spiritual Director and the venue for the meetings changed to St Dominic’s Priory, Newcastle. Fr Brendan introduced the monthly newsletter and the first edition, which he typeset, was issued in July 1991 bearing the emblem which he designed with this introduction. The following is an extract from that first edition.

Welcome to this first issue of our Newsletter! It seems necessary that something like this be produced for our area of the North East, as most other Newsletters dealing with Medjugorje are concerned with events etc. taking place in other parts of the country. We hope and pray that Our Lady will bless our efforts. It is a non-profit making venture which will rely solely on donations to produce and distribute it. Like other things we have done since forming this Group, we have consecrated it all to Our Blessed Mother: everything is in her hands. If it be her wish that we continue she will make it possible.
Our main purpose is to reach as many people as possible, so that they become more aware of the importance of the events taking place in Medjugorje and the significance of those events for mankind today. Those who have been fortunate enough to be able to visit Medjugorje are aware of the stress Our Lady is putting upon prayer - and especially the Rosary. It is our hope that there will be many among our readers who have not been to Medjugorje but who nevertheless will understand that her messages are addressed to all, and will either begin saying the Rosary regularly by themselves - or better - join with others in their neighborhood. We hope to bring you the regular Monthly Messages as soon possible after they are given, together with other items of news, events, etc.

The inaugural meeting of the group in May 1989 adopted the name, ‘Medjugorje Promoters’ Group
( North East ).
In 1990, Fr Brendan Hodgson O.P.(R.I.P.) was invited to be Spiritual Director .
In July 1991 the first edition of the monthly newsletter was issued.
August 1992: the group was renamed, Medjugorje Centre ( North East ).
February 1993: Fr Brendan left the North East to take up a new appointment and Fr Ciaran McDonnell
became the new Spiritual Director.
